Summer at Muraviovka Park - a photo collection

White-naped Crane Antigone vipio. All photos taken by Roland Speck.
In summer 2015, nature enthusiast and photographer Roland Speck visited the Muraviovka Park for his second time. And again, he managed to take some stunning shots, despite harsh conditions with temperatures around 40°C and thousands of mosquitoes. Many thanks for sharing this nice report and those beautiful pictures!

"In the middle of June 2015 I visited the Muraviovski Park for the second time. I wanted to take nice pictures, especially from cranes. Thanks to the great organization of the park’s staff, especially Svetlana, everything went smoothly with the organization, accommodation and food.

The local ornithologists had reached their last week of their spring ringing period, and Wieland did not give me much hope to catch many singing birds with the camera. However and fortunately, the guys ringing the birds have perfect knowledge about the area, and the ignorant photographer could be „navigated“ by them.

Nevertheless, some luck is required to get close enough to the cranes and to reach a good shooting position. To escape from the heat of the summer that had just started (documented 44 ° C at the station during lunch time), I headed early towards the swamp. Once arrived, I reached an elevation in the middle of the huge grass and water surface.

Black-browed Reed Warbler Acrocephalus bistrigiceps
There were all territories at the edges claimed by Black-browed Reed-Warblers, over the marsh Northern Lapwings flew excitedly to and fro. At first I thought that the excitement was caused by my presence and there must be some nests not far away. I suddenly realized the trigger: White-naped canes. I’m pretty sure, young Lap-wings are only a small snack for them.

The cranes had also noticed me and flew away, and landed again out of my sight. So it was time to hide and wait. Slowly, the sun came up, and the first rays revealed which day temperature could be expected.

So I set out. Wading through the swamp with full equipment is always a nice experience. All of a sudden, the cranes reappeared. I was likely to head unconscious in the direction of their chicks. In any case, the parent birds flew past me and did land not as far as 30 or 40 meters from me.

What to do? No chance to build a dry spot around tripod or even camouflage overlay; I stood in the water up to my knees. And they had obviously spotted me already. I took out the camera quickly, placed the tripod in the swamp and recorded what only went. 'Things can dry out later' I thoughtSo I had them, just like in a double pack, "my" White-naped cranes.

For me my fantastic experience remains, being so close to these beautiful birds; for the park a few good pictures for their further work. See you again, Muraviovski Park ..."

Was tun?

Black-browed Reed Warbler Acrocephalus bistrigiceps

(Vanellus vanellus).
